Many business directors will personalize the plates on their luxury vehicles in line with the corporate image of their business. In time. a personalized plate could become very valuable if it is in demand. Some people consider a personalized plate as an investment as much as it's a way to personalize their vehicle.
Personalized plates can vary from personal initials to company names. Some like to use quirky phrases such as MINE or FLY which reflect their personality. For many people, their vehicles are an extension of themselves. Some people work for years in order to purchase their dream car and when they do, they want to personalize their number plates. It is a way of saying that they have arrived, they have achieved their goals, and they are extremely proud of that achievement. Perhaps a few years later, your life priorities will have changed and then you may consider selling your personalized plate.
Who Would You Contact to Sell Your Personalized Plate?
There are a handful of authorized companies in the United Kingdom who can act as brokers and sell your plate for you. Once you decide to sell to them, they will often take on the marketing and advertising costs in order to sell the plate. The broker will assist in advising regarding what paperwork is required by the DVLA in order to change ownership of the personalized plate. They also help to manage the payment and registration process so the transaction can be completed with relative speed and efficiency. For their services, a broker will request a commission from the sale. This is negotiated at the time of instituting the broker agreement.
What Information Do You Need to Provide to Sell Your Personalized Plate?
You will need to provide all your personal particulars to the broker. This includes your full name, address, contact phone number, and work contact details. You will also need to provide information on the type of car that the personalized plate is on and how many years you have owned the registration of the personalized plate. You will then be asked for your registration number to prove that you are the legal owner of the personalized plate. What Are the Legal Considerations When Selling a Personalized Plate?
There are several things that you need to keep in mind in order to comply with the law when selling your personalized plate. DVLA registration requirements and rules need to be adhered to and it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with your basic responsibilities as a seller. Sometimes the seller will be required to present the vehicle to a local Department of Transport's Licensing Office for inspection. The seller also has the responsibility of affixing the replacement registration mark, after approval has been received from the DVLA. All the necessary paperwork including the Current V5 and MOT Certificates need to be presented by the seller when the sale is processed. Once the sale has gone through, both the buyer and seller will receive updated V5 certificates. Be aware that should the Department of Transport change or update their registration requirements, you will need to comply with these.
What Happens if You Change your Mind About Selling Your Personalized Plate?
Depending on your broker agreement, there may be penalties involved if you decide to cancel the sale of your personalized plate. This would, however, depend on how far along the sale process you are. If you have only just listed your personalized plate and no buyer has yet been found then the penalties are likely to be quite small. If, however, a buyer has been found, they have already made payment to the broker, and the sale is then cancelled by the seller, the seller will be responsible for paying the broker's commission even though they don't benefit from the sale. This is because the broker has an obligation to refund the buyer. They have also invested considerable time and effort in order to facilitate the sale and as such need to be compensated for their efforts.
